Temple Baptist Church was established at the home of T.E. (Esco) and Dora May Bond, August 20, 1953. They opened their home up on a Sunday and Wednesday for church to be held. The first pastor was A.R. Strickland.
Mrs. Strickland named the church Temple Missionary Baptist Church because they were devoted to missionary work.
On October 1, 1953 the church went into conference to discuss the buying of land for the present day site of Temple from Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kornman for the price of the fence on the land.
May 27, 1954 the church went into special conference for signing necessary notes, deed of trust and other legal documents for the ourchase of the land.
On September 12, 1954 the first service on the new site for Temple Missionary Baptist Church was held. Brother A.R. Strickland gave the sermon from Matthew Chapter 25. The first sone was, "I Want to Be A Worker For The Lord" with Mrs. Dora May Bond, pianist. Dinner on ground was served after service at the Bond's home in honor to them for the use of their home.
The new church was built with two Sunday schoool classrooms. The kids used those for their classes and the grown-ups used the sanctuary for theirs. Men sat on one side and the women sat on the other side. They also would use cars with four doors for classrooms on the parking lot. The church was heated by propane heaters. During the winter you didnt dare sit by the windows away from the heater because you would freeze. The pews were homemade slats and uncomfortable. There was once a mosquito infestation at the church. Some of the members had some fun slapping each other when they would spot a mosquito landing on each other.
